Renew Outreach’s Mobile Media Conversion Training Center

The folks at Renew Outreach have been kicking out the activity in mobile ministry lately. From our literal witness, they’ve gone from having a passing impression of mobile for ministry in their space, to becoming an on-the-ground leader towards enabling their ministry activities forward with the aid of mobile ministry techniques. One of the features they’ve introduced that really impresses me is a Media Conversion Training Center. The Media Conversion Training Center is a “step-by-step guides to convert Gospel media (whether that’s the Jesus Film, the audio Bible, GRN, other media or your own creations) into formats that will play on various different platforms.”

What’s really neat about this training center is that its not only for the content that Renew has for their devices, they’ve essentially given some depth to standards for mobile media distribution for anyone. See the below images for what they are doing:

The fruit of that work can be seen in this video produced by Renew from work in Inquitos, Peru:

Really neat work and something that many ministries have been looking to do for sometime. Renew has been working on a series called Mobile Ministry in Action which gets into more specifics about these activities and what they are doing as an organization to move forward.

Mobile Evangelism at Renew Outreach

Its always a joy when other ministries jump into the area of mobile ministry and begin to take their unique content or audiences and do something familiar and different at the same time. One of the most recent examples of this comes from our friends at Renew Outreach. As you might recall, about a year ago, we interviewed the founder/president of Renew (David Palusky), and now we are seeing some of outgrowth of parts of that conversation that were not covered on-camera.

What now appears on the Renew Outreach website is a section dedicated to the topic of mobile evangelism. Besides the previously linked video, there’s also a decent explanation towards the methods used in mobile evangelism. Here’s a snippet from that page towards what this section is aiming to do:

Currently, there are around six billion mobile phones (cellphones) worldwide. Most of these devices are capable of playing audio and video files that tell the Gospel story. Renew World Outreach has created these training videos to empower mobile evangelists so that they can make use of the three main tools for distributing Gospel content – such as audio Bibles or the Jesus Film – to mobile phones in rural areas. To begin the video training series, start with the Bluetooth Intro video…

Renew is also good friends with the folks over at the Kiosk Evangelism Project and so its not too surprising to see some of the same methods and tactics used here in order to share the faith and extend the viability of content production efforts.

For more information, in addition to utilizing the mobile evangelism efforts for your own teams, visit the Mobile Evangelism section at Renew Outreach. If you, or someone you know, is involved with missions to the literal ends of the earth – areas where we are just beginning to explore – then I’d recommend Renew Outreach’s expertise here as well – they specialize in audio, video, and solar technologies that speak to the conditions faced at the edge.

story4all – Heart Languages and Faith by Ears

story4all (logo)Last week, we spent some time with Renew Outreach talking about missions in remote areas, literacy, and how mobile is making its way into these very unlikely environments profitably for the Gospel (we’ve got a bit about those folks coming). One of the groups tossed out during one of several conversations was story4all, a podcast-based Christian media group which uses audio streams in the heart/native language of those being preached, spoken to.

A bit more about them from their website:

…We believe deeply that the Message Jesus delivered was not only brought by Him “wearing our skin” (becoming like us and embodying the Message), but it came in a style best understood by His audience, and in a language of the heart.

It has been estimated that only 8% of people living in Israel during Jesus’ time on earth were literate. However, He came and taught everyone (literate Pharisees, etc., as well as the mostly non-literate populace) through the medium of stories. Mark chapter 4 says “He was never without a story when He spoke”. Jesus saw fit to deliver truths to the literate and non-literate alike through the medium of stories. He demonstrated through this that to be effective and to promote recall in the minds of those who hear, most of our communication should be housed in stories.

Ironically, 90% of all Christian ministry today occurs through literate communication styles…

For those of you who’s mobile and ministry pursuits need to start with audio stories (not visual stories), story4all seems like a great place for connection and content. Check out their website and subscribe to their podcast RSS, iTunes). You might find that the heart language they speak, also ressonates with the faith that you aim to share with others.

The 2011 Mobile Minsitry Forum Consultation occurred a few weeks ago and was certainly chock full of presentations, connections, and insights. Per our usual fare, there’s a sketchnote containing all of the moments we attended during the 2.5 days. Check it out, and look forward to detailed stories about some of the ministries and their efforts in future articles.
